Cycling is an activity that most people experience at some stage of their lives. Some grow to love it while others cannot wait to swop the bike for a car. Some motorists don't seem to realise that cyclists ride their bikes because they want to. Cycling is good exercise and it is a healthy and enjoyable pastime. It is not something that people do because they cannot afford a car or are not old enough to obtain a driving licence. Many cyclists are drivers too!
When the general motoring public eventually realise this then they might display some manners and respect.
New club members need to be aware of the perils of sharing the roads with motor vehicles.
Every Saturday, at Santry Stadium 9.30am, the club meet for a sociable spin. This is usually about an 80km loop around north county Dublin with a coffee/tea stop after 60km.
It is excellent training for new members as the pace is not too hectic and it also gives the opportunity to experience bunch riding.
These spins build strength and endurance. This is also where a "sense of belonging" is nurtured as the banter and cameraderie take equal billing to the pedalling.(well...almost!)
As the riders grow in strength and confidence they can begin to include some extra spins during the week. These could be 1-2 hour spins(during daylight hours) or some running or gym work. Before long, the new member could be fit and strong enough to attempt the more difficult and longer Sunday spin.
The combination of a Saturday and Sunday spin and adequate recuperation will build strength and fitness.
Of course, riders will only do this when they feel ready and on the advice of the club coaches.
Some members are happy with the Saturday spin and all that goes with it.
Riders have different needs and varied reasons for joining a cycling club. Those who become members of the Dublin Wheelers are catered for on many different levels. There is a touring section through to a veterans racing brigade and anyone can apply for membership.
Younger riders are especially welcome as that section of the club needs strengthening.
Enjoyed the BotB run. Had some delusion it might be the de-scheduled club randonnee. The political theory discussion was most illuminating; at 50km/h downhill I hear "in his seminal 1994 paper...
Consider yourself lucky Lenny, remember the film Logan's Run, where ya got bumped off when ya reached 30! At least CI allow you another 10 years before you are marked for termination.
