Hi Folks,

I can't help but wonder about this....117 views & zero comments/feedback? After all, this is our AGM that we're talking about. Hopefully there are some motions passed to Ciaran but not posted here. We're fortunate to belong to a great club & the vol of riders every sat speaks for itself. However I think that there's more to a club / membership of same than just turning up for sat spins - what do people think?

Off the top of my head, we need to discuss items such as:

New members
How do we cater for same? Do we really want them (be honest)? Who is willing to give up a spin & do a short one? A rota maybe? What happens if we dont get new members? 5yrs time? 10 yrs time?

Winter training
Does '1 size fits all' work? Two groups? Routes? Route leaders?

Racing
Are there sufficient nos interested to form proper training groups / structured training plans / teams for races / support etc. Worryingly recent races suggest otherwise - where is everyone? Where have all the winter wonders gone?! ;-)

Open race(s) to be promoted by DWCC
What/where/when etc
Details will be required by CI before eoy.

Touring
How about a proper touring section, complete with secretary etc? Different route leaders every week. Proper schedule of different & interesting routes. Can dbl as sportive training & also as entry point for new members.

DWCC Randonee
IS this working? Do we continue? Any changes required?

Club Champs
Worth running? Would a change of venue make any difference?

Club League
Any interest in resurrecting? Would we get the nos?

Club TT League
New for 2009 - any interest for 2010? Again, would we get the nos? Open to other clubs?

I'm sure there are many more topics worthy of debate. As mentioned, we've a great gang of people & hence lots of potential. Club membership (any cluCool involves a small contribution every now & then as individual circumstance allow. eg marshalling, mentoring, promoting DWCC events & the most underrated one of all: participation.

Note that I'm not trying to bug anyone with the comments above! I am however trying to promote some thought & reflection, which hopefully will spill over into discussion on club spins etc & who knows where it will lead...

So...any thoughts ?

Thanks,

Noel

Hi there,

Noel has made a few good points that should to be discussed.

One thing I want to add relates to Club gear, to discuss ordering new gear & about keeping a stock. At the moment we don't have any Club gear for new members, & also for those of us who seemed to have "grown out" of our current Club gear (XXL for me this time...Frown)

Thanks,
Andreas

Noel makes a lot of very valid points here. The agm is only a few weeks away and I hope everyone will have by then taken some time to mull over these points. A lively agm should then be guaranteed!!

I would like to add that we should not have to rely on just one person to run our club. This year we were very fortunate to have Ciaran take on both positions of treasurer AND secretary . A better distribution of the workload is required.

Andreas,

The new gear has been ordered and should be arriving shortly.

We ordered a small number of items due to the lack of orders from individual club members. That gear order was discussed on this forum and notified to members by email.
It was stressed that it would be the only gear order for 2009/2010. Most members still did not order some kit.

I do not think that we will be discussing club gear at the AGM.

Again, thanks Noel for providing food for thought - and lots of it.

However, with no disrespect to Ciaran, only the likes of Cowen can probably get away with deciding what should or shouldn't be discussed at meetings!

Indeed Liam, an interesting point of view.

The AGM venue is available to the club for a limited amount of time. There are many issues to be discussed although not much interest being shown by members, as Noel has already pointed out.
The current clothing order shall be arriving shortly. This is a very small order as the majority of members decided that they did not need new kit.
It was made clear to members that there would be no further clothing order until the end of 2010.
Bearing this in mind, a discussion on club clothing at the 2009 AGM seems pointless. 2010 might be a better option.

However, feel free to email any topics which you think warrant discussion. The address is dwccsecretary@gmail.com The inbox is still empty!

Hi All,

The AGM went ahead on Wednesday evening and I will email the minutes to everybody this weekend.
There have been some changes and recommendations made.

There will be 2 spins on Saturday mornings. The meeting time and place remain the same but there will be a slower and faster group.

The faster group will comprise of the racing members, and others who feel capable, and will cover the usual Saturday distance.

The slower group will cater for newcomers and present members who want to enjoy a spin at a more comfortable pace. Routes covered will be shorter than the faster group. (50km - 60km approximately) An experienced club member will lead these spins.

The faster group will leave at 9.30am with the next group leaving about 5 minutes later.

Both groups will meet at the coffee stop which will continue as usual. This is essential for club bonding and is an integral part of the club spin experience.

If an insufficient number of riders turn up on any Saturday then it might not be possible to hold 2 spins. This scenario would result in 1 group only on that day.

Start date: Saturday 10th September 2009

Thank you

Hi All,

We need two names to headline the different Saturday spins. Fast/Slow or A/B group does not seem to be working. Nobody is willing to go with the second group which leads to the pre AGM scenario of 1 group only.

I think we should call the groups after Jimmy and Robbie. Any ideas?

There is no stigma attached to going with a slightly easier group. As one grows in strength and experience one can join the faster group, although this is not a rule. Riders can stay in the slower group if they feel more comfortable. Riders returning after injury or a break might like to start in an easier bunch.

Everyone should enjoy the Saturday spin experience. It is not essential to suffer from start to finish and to arrive home on your hands and knees.
This was tried in the 1980's and I don't recognize many faces from those times, in the present bunches.

Love Cycling. Love the Bike. Enjoy group spins.

It finally happened!!!
Today we had two separate groups leave the Santry start point. First off went the ‘A’ bunch which covered the usual route to Skerries, Naul and then across to Ashbourne. Five minutes later the ‘B’ bunch departed and did a slightly shorter spin which went out through Oldtown, up the Three Sisters, then up to Fourknocks, Clonalvy and on to the coffee shop in Ashbourne to meet up with the ‘A’ bunch.
This new system worked very well with all riders of various ability, being able to ride comfortably in a suitable group. As a result everyone arrived into the coffee shop in one piece, (there should be no more reports of riders collapsing into their sofas for the rest of the day to recover!!) so here’s hoping that the new system will continue.

The 2 spin plan has to be put into action every Saturday morning.

This must be decided at Santry before departure.

There are riders training for the racing season and they will be travelling at a higher and more constant pace throughout the spin. This is not suitable for more leisurely riders or for novices.

2 spins are necessary due to the different levels and aspirations of the club members. Everyone will still meet at the coffee shop and cycle in as one group.

Thx Paul - the real mechanical difficulty was in the legs - they wouldn't pump fast enough Wink

Well done Wez in the 2-day at the weekend. Would have been a contender except for a TT mechanical difficulty.

Typical us Wheelers upsetting The Boyne Valley Manor House security systems, mind you swords did it too!

Enjoyed the BotB run. Had some delusion it might be the de-scheduled club randonnee. The political theory discussion was most illuminating; at 50km/h downhill I hear "in his seminal 1994 paper...

Not sure Rory but hoping to find out tomorrow. Maybe there will be a repeat of 1690, on bikes.

04/09/2010 18:27
Sunday club cycle is "Battle of Boyne" route, what is that?

03/09/2010 01:58
Another few years and the majority of CI members should be ready for the terminator. Who will ride the championships then?

02/09/2010 22:03
Consider yourself lucky Lenny, remember the film Logan's Run, where ya got bumped off when ya reached 30! At least CI allow you another 10 years before you are marked for termination.

02/09/2010 20:26
Mr F that is a load of BS and there we are training like mad things for this our end of season classic. Lets do it.

There's a new open race on the calendar for this Thurs in Mondello - looks like fun.
